MRI scans are widely used to help doctors diagnose patient injuries, conditions, and pain. In this article, we are going to talk a bit about MRI scans – when they are useful in identifying pain causes, and what to do if your MRI fails to reveal an accurate diagnosis.

When can MRIs be Useful?

MRI, short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a diagnostic medical scan that uses radio waves to create pictures of the body’s inner structures (organs, bones, nerves, etc.). MRI scans are incredibly useful in identifying and diagnosing a variety of medical conditions, such as:

  • Tumors
  • Damage to blood vessels
  • Internal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Injuries

While MRIs are often instrumental in landing on a diagnosis, sometimes they do not reveal any concrete cause of a patient’s pain. This can make treatment all the more difficult.

Dealing with Unknown Pain

The cornerstone of any successful pain management strategy is an accurate diagnosis. When you know what’s causing your pain, you can take concrete action to resolve the issue (and the pain in the process). Conversely, if the cause of your pain is unknown, you’ll find yourself trying treatment methods with no focused strategy. This can prolong your pain and waste your time.
