MRIs are used by many pain management professionals to determine a diagnosis and figure out what’s causing a patient’s pain. Even though they are widespread, patients who have never had an MRI scan often experience a lot of anxiety and nervousness going into the scan. In this article, we are going to walk through the basics of what you can expect from an MRI scan.

Before Your Appointment

Prior to your actual appointment, your doctor will likely provide you with a list of expectations and requirements for your scan. Unlike blood tests, you typically do not need to fast before an MRI scan. If you have any questions about your scan, this is a good time to raise them. For example, if you have a history of claustrophobia, talk with your doctor. Traditional MRI scans are quite confined and can pose issues for claustrophobic patients. However, there are newer types of MRI machines like the open upright, and wide-bore models that offer extra room for patients who suffer from claustrophobia and other conditions.

The Day of Your Appointment

As with any medical appointment, it’s always a good idea to arrive a few minutes early to fill out any necessary paperwork before the procedure. The procedure itself is completely painless. The most difficult part for many patients is lying still for the time it takes to complete the scan (which can be anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes). Inside the MRI machine it also gets very loud – so come prepared with ear plugs if you anticipate that being an issue.
