Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition of the spine caused by a narrowing of the spinal column. It can lead to back pain in the neck or low back, as well as numbness in the back or legs. Because stenosis impacts the spinal nerves, quick treatment is essential to prevent permanent damage.

Spinal Stenosis Definition & Causes

Spinal stenosis is characterized by a narrowing of the spinal column. This narrowing can be caused by genetics, herniated spinal discs, bone spurs, tumors, injuries to the spine, and other medical issues. Stenosis constricts the spinal column and can cause nerve damage if not treated.

Spinal stenosis is most common in the low back but can occur in the neck region of the spine. Any combination of the following symptoms can indicate spinal stenosis:

  • Back pain – typically in the lower back or neck
  • Numbness or tingling feeling in the low back or legs
  • Difficulty walking or keeping your balance

These symptoms overlap with several other back conditions, which makes an accurate diagnosis even more essential to effective treatment.

Spinal Stenosis Treatment Options

Initially, spinal stenosis is often treated with nonsurgical methods like medication to manage pain, and steroidal injections to reduce inflammation. If these conservative options are not helpful, a surgical procedure may be recommended. These procedures are aimed at freeing up space in the spinal canal and relieving pressure on the spinal nerves.
